Apple releases new OSX printer drivers

Apple Inc. has released a new batch of printer drivers to help computers running the Snow Leopard and Lion flavors of its OS X operating system address problems with printers.

 

The latest updates cover new and current print and scanning devices from Canon, Samsung, Gestetner, Ricoh, Infotec, Lanier, InfoPrint, and NRG, tech site CNET reported.

 

CNET noted Apple's print system is built on the open-source Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) technology.

 

It said the printer drivers for the CUPS system refine generic driver sets to accommodate the features in new hardware.

 

Most of the driver packages are between 16MB and 34MB in size, but some like the drivers for Canon and other large-name printer manufacturers, may be over 300MB as they have software for numerous devices instead of just one.

 

CNET said OS X users can use the Software Update feature to install the drivers, with Software Update detecting which printer devices one has, and download only the needed driver updates. — TJD, GMA News
