Twitterverse reacts to PBA veto of Lassiter trade

February 20, 2012 5:22pm
With PBA Commissioner Chito Salud vetoing the Powerade-Petron trade of Marcio Lassiter for Nonoy Baclao and Rey Guevarra, basketball fans took to Twitter to express their delight.

"Upon evaluation of the trade that is now before my office, I am exercising my right as commissioner to veto the trade, return the trade to the parties concerned for possible revisions to make it more balanced," said Salud in an official release from the PBA Office.

In addition to vetoing the trade, Salud also announced that the league plans to draft new rules to prevent a similar case from happening, saying, "There are no rules that cover the gap between the intention to sell [a franchise] and the actual notice sent to the PBA. That's why our board has agreed that during the next board meeting, the commissioner will be proposing rules precisely to cover that lag, that vacuum and together, collectively, we will formulate rules to avoid the unloading or trading of players in contemplation of a sale."

The San Miguel Corporation, which owns the Blaze Boosters, had been rumored to be contemplating a purchase of Powerade. The proposed trade would have been an example of the owner trying to circumvent the PBA's rules prohibiting the exchange of players directly between sister teams. - Renee Fopalan/AMD, GMA News
