National team head coach Chot Reyes shared a copy of the commitment letter sent out to the 16-man "Gilas 2" pool via Twitter, and revealed that he has gotten go-signals from more than half of the prospects, Tuesday. The letter, sent out via the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, asks the signee to confirm one's "willingness to be included in the pool of candidates for the SMART GILAS PILIPINAS Men's National Team." It goes on to say that a pool player must "devote..full time and effort to SMART GILAS in the off-season, even if it means sacrificing...rest and vacation periods, from now until the FIBA-Asia Championships in September, 2012, and even possibly the FIBA-World Championships in September, 2014." In addition, it also contains the disclaimer that "the possibility exists that I [the signee] will not make it to the final line-up." Included in the pool are Jimmy Alapag, Alex Cabagnot, Jason Castro, LA Tenorio, Gary David, Ryan Reyes, James Yap, Marcio Lassiter, Larry Fonacier, Gabe Norwood, Arwind Santos, Ranidel de Ocampo, Marc Pingris, Kelly Williams, Sonny Thoss and Enrico Villanueva. Reyes later tweeted that his Talk 'N Text players Alapag, Castro, Reyes, Fonacier, De Ocampo, and Williams, as well as Rain or Shine's Norwood, Alaska Aces Tenorio and Thoss, Powerade's Gary David, and Barangay Ginebra's Enrico Villanueva have all agreed to join the national pool. Among those who have yet to reply back include Petron Blaze Boosters Arwind Santos and Alex Cabagnot, who have "referred d matter to their mgt." The B-MEG Llamados, which lists James Yap and Marc Pingris on their roster, has "asked that d letter be coursed thru d PBA" as they're still playing in the PBA quarterfinals. David's Powerade teammate Marcio Lassiter gave his vocal assent, though he has not returned the letter yet, Reyes added. The Gilas braintrust hopes to get replies from all the players by April 11. Aside from the PBA-backed 16, Reyes will also form a cadet pool, comprised of collegiate and semi-professional players. — JVP, GMA News
