Anonymous hackers target China's Great Firewall

Hacktivist group Anonymous may be planning more attacks on Chinese government websites as part of what it claims to be efforts to expose corruption, and to push for human rights.

A report on The Hacker News said the group, which had already defaced some 500 sites, claimed it is not finished yet, and has bigger targets in its sights.

One of the hackers —identified only as “f0ws3r”— was quoted as telling the Reuters news agency that the group is hoping to take down the “Great Firewall of China.”

However, it said the hacker declined to give further details on the next round of attacks, except that it may hit bigger targets.

“They claim to have hundreds of translators helping them hack Chinese Web sites. This is consistent with the hacks that happened a few weeks ago being displayed in English instead of Chinese,” The Hacker News said.

Also, The Hacker News report cited an entry on the group’s “Anonymous China” Twitter account to make public the attacks, including posting links to files that contained passwords and other personal information from the hacked websites.

Earlier, the United States said it has suffered many high-profile hacking attacks that appear to come from China, often targeting human rights groups as well as US companies.
