La Salle trounces PMMS for first win in Fr. Martin Cup

La Salle bounced back from an opening game loss to San Beda as the Green Archers cruised to a 91-54 win over Philippine Merchant Marine School Tueday in the 18th Fr. Martin Summer Cup basketball tournament at the San Beda College Gym. Jerron Teng and Thomas Torres scored 14 points each to help the Green Archers clinch their first win after suffering a 69-63 loss to the Red Lions on Sunday. FEU scored a 73-70 win over Informatics in the other Seniors B division game. In other opening week matches, reigning UAAP champion Ateneo joined Perpetual Help for the early lead in the men's division after the Blue Eagles easily disposed of Lyceum, 66-40. Perpetual Help joined Ateneo on top of Group A after a 73-56 win over Ateneo-B. In juniors action, reigning UAAP champion NU Bullpups mauled the NCBA Junior Wildcats, 101-63. The Red Cubs of San Beda romped past University of the Philippines Integrated School Baby Maroons, 73-50, for their second straight win. San Beda's first win came at the expense of the UST Tiger Cubs, 119-58. Far Eastern University-FERN Baby Tamaraws eked out a 71-67 decision over STI Junior Olympians while UAAP junior titlist Ateneo had an easy outing after the Blue Eaglets won by forfeit against St. Stephen High School. Adamson and Central Luzon champions Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation are also undefeated in the juniors division. The Baby Falcons trounced the Junior Wildcats, 68-53, while JILCF diffused the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers, 68-53. Perennial WNCAA title contender LPU Lady Pirates relied on Frances Mae Cabinbin's heroics to pull off a 60-58 upset win over reigning UAAP champion FEU Lady Tamaraws. Ateneo joined Lyceum on top of the women's standingsafter the comebacking Lady Eagles, behind the combined 34 points of Val Chua, Sarah Mercado and Ish Tiu, blasted the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 66-55. — JVP, GMA News
