A new program claiming to encrypt Skype videoconferencing software has turned out to be hiding malware, a computer security firm said.
Trend Micro said the DarkComet Trojan is stored inside the fake app, with the webpage advertising the dubious app based in Syria.
"If users are tricked into downloading the file, a program does appear that is supposed to encrypt users’ Skype data. The said file, Skype Encription v 2.1.exe, is detected by Trend Micro as BKDR_METEO.HVN. During the analysis, we did not find any evidence that the software actually provides any security properties," it said.
Also, Trend Micro said the malware contains interesting data strings that suggest it may have been made by SYrian hackers.
It added the malware is actually DarkComet version 3.3 and connects home once it is installed and activated.
"Once BKDR_ZAPCHAST.HVN is installed, the attackers are able to take full control of the compromised system through the DarkComet RAT," it said. — TJD, GMA News
