Filipino celebrities are among the leading contenders in the annual “Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity” contest of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an animal rights group.

In a news release on Thrusday, PETA said some names that may ring a bell are Kapuso stars Yasmien Kurdi and Raymond Bagatsing, as well as “For Him Magazine” (FHM) babes Alicia Mayer and actors Geneva Cruz, Chin-Chin Gutierrez, Juliana Palermo, Carlos Agassi, among others.

The other international figures in the contest are  Anne Hathaway, Ellen DeGeneres and Natalie Portman, former US President Bill Clinton, Singer Jason Mraz, Asian Celebrity Barbie Hsu and former Boxing Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson.
According to the PETA website, the winner of the "Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity" contest will be determined based on four factors:
  • number of votes received by the celebrities,
  • the celebrity's commitment to vegetarianism,
  • PETA's assessment of the celebrities' attractiveness, and
  • the media-friendliness of each celebrity.

Fans may vote for their favorite vegetarian celebrities until May 15.

PETA cited how being a vegetarian helps save both the environment and the human body while preventing animal maltreatment. The Vegetarian Society defines a vegetarian as someone who does not eat any meat, poultry, game, fish, shellfish or by-products of slaughter.
Filipino singer and actress Geneva Cruz, in an FHM article, said: “For me, being vegan is not about the diet. It’s really about my love for all creatures.”

“In addition to saving countless animals every year, the health benefits of a vegan diet are countless, whereas the consumption of animal-derived foods has been linked to not only heart disease and cancer but also multiple sclerosis and osteoporosis,” Cruz added.
