The UAAP and the NCAA defending champions took care of business Saturday as they disposed of separate foes in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre-season Tournament at the San Juan Arena. Ateneo downed a determined UP squad, 69-60, with Greg Slaugther pacing the Eagles with 15 points. The Fighting Maroons found themselves trailing most of the game, only leading once in the first quarter, 15-14. But for every UP surge came a defensive stop and a conversion for the Eagles who enjoyed a 39-30 lead at the half. Early in the third, Ateneo took a 14-point lead before the Maroons tried to ignite a comeback. UP newcomer Raul Soyud hit two straight jumpers, followed by conversions from Mike Silungan and Chris Ball, as Ateneo's lead was cut to three points, 48-45. In response, the Eagles called a timeout and drew up a play, which was successfully executed, as Juami Tiongson nailed a three-pointer to kill UP's momentum. At the start of the fourth, UP tried to make a run for the lead once again, cutting the lead to 3, 53-50, before Tiongson hit another crucial three-pointer to counter the Maroon offensive. A Nico Salva jumper put the Eagles up 11 with 2:13 remaining in the affair, giving Ateneo a 65-54 lead. The hot-handed Soyud, who scored 16 for the Maroons, found himself unable to sustain his perimeter shooting against Slaughter late in the game, as he missed two successive jumpers in the final minutes to foil UP's attempt at a last push. Salva and Tonino Gonzaga scored 12 apiece for the Eagles, while Justin Chua added 11. Kiefer Ravena had 5 points, shooting just 2-of-9 from the field. Ryan Buenafe failed to score in 16 minutes, but the former UAAP Finals MVP dished four assists and grabbed four rebounds for the boys in blue and white. Soyud paired his 16-point production with nine rebounds, while Mike Silungan struggled from the field, shooting 3-of-13 for nine points. In the earlier game, San Beda shook off a rusty start as it overwhelmed the UE Red Warriors, 91-57. The two teams struggled to find their offense in the opening quarter, with UE scoring only five points while San Beda tallied 11. In the second quarter, the teams found their offensive groove as the halftime whistle sounded with the Red Lions ahead 29-22. It was in the third quarter when San Beda started to pull away, as they out-scored UE 33-15 for a 62-37 advantage leading up to the final period. In the fourth, San Beda continued its scoring spree, tallying 29 more points to UE's 20 for the 91-57 final score. Julius Armon paced the Red Lions with 17 points, while Rome Dela Rosa added 12. For the Warriors, Roy Sumang was the only player in double figures with 14 points. San Beda remained undefeated in five outings, while Ateneo stayed a step behind at 4-1. UE sank to 1-2, while UP remained without a win after two outings. - AMD, GMA News The scores: Game 1 : SBC 91 - Armon 17, Dela Rosa 12, J.
