The dying out of a species can happen with or without human intervention, but the natural process happens at a much slower rate and the over-all balance of the ecosystem is usually maintained. Entire species dying out due to human activity, however, happens at an accelerated rate and has serious implications to the rest of the biosphere.
Often, people hunt endangered animals to turn these into food. There are various reasons for this: Cultural and religious traditions, medicinal purposes, economic motivations, and sometimes, mere vanity and whimsy.
The GMA News TV program "Ang Pinaka" featured 10 endangered animals that people hunt and eat. Among the resource persons interviewed for the feature are Gregg Yan from the World Wildlife Fund Philippines; Dr. Manuel Carlos from the Marikina City Veterinary Office; and Virgilio Palpatoc from the Zoology division of the National Museum.
