The San Miguel Beermen needed an extra period to snag game one of the best-of-three semifinals series against the Westports Malaysia Dragons at the Olivarez Gym in Parañaque City over the weekend. The Dragons started the game hot, scoring 29 points to San Miguel's 20. The Beermen's 20. In the second, San Miguel fought back, posting 29 of their own for a halftime score of 55-49 to the Dragons. San Miguel continued to inch closer, as Nick Fazekas hit back to back three pointers to pull ahead of the Dragons, 67-64, with less than five minutes left in the third. Neither of the two teams were able to pull away in the final period. Chris Banchero gave San Miguel a slim 91-88 lead with less than two minutes remaining, but the lead did not last long as Brian Williams drained a three to tie the game at 91. With the game for the Beermen to win, Banchero drove to the middle, only to dish off to a waiting Fazekas behind the threepoint line. The 6-11 American missed the game-winner, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, Banchero and Avenido challenged the Dragons defense, scoring on layups at will to give the Beermen a two-posession lead with a bit over a minute left, 104-100. The Dragons were unable to commit fouls to send San Miguel to the line, as the home team survived the determined visitors, for the 111-104 final score. Fazekas went for a 50% shooting clip for a total of 32 points and eight rebounds. Duke Crews also had an impressive shooting night, going 11/18 for 25 points and 11 rebounds.
