In 2008, Metal Gear Solid 4 was released exclusively for the Playstation 3 to raving reviews and legions of loyal fans. It was a monumental triumph both figuratively and literally for series creator Hideo Kojima, as it was supposed to be the final chapter to a saga that began in the late 80’s. In MGS4, the story of Solid Snake was coming to an end, as all loose ends that were left unresolved in the series’ long and convoluted history were finally resolved.
However, that may not be the case now, as reports from G4TV and Eurogamer lend credence to the fact that Metal Gear Solid 5 is indeed in the works.
Hideo Kojima confirmed this during an interview with French magazine IG, and the game will be using Kojima Productions proprietary Fox Engine. However, it’s still not known in what capacity Kojima’s involvement with the project will be, or even if he’ll even be directing the game again. The series’ creator did hint that Solid Snake may come back, but didn’t elaborate on any further details or what the game’s plot would be.
“ We have not finished with Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots,” Kojima stated in the interview. In MGS4, Solid Snake degenerated into a tired old version of himself, assuming the new alias of “Old Snake” and still doing what he does best. MGS5 may have other plans for the legendary soldier’s final days however, and the game is said to be more a “Infiltration Game” that’s akin to Deus EX: Human Revolution.
Whatever lies ahead for the Metal Gear franchise, it’s a safe bet to assume that diehard fans of the franchise will be pleased by this announcement. Hideo Kojima has stepped up the game with every installment of his Tactical Espionage Action franchise, and if there’s more Snake action to come, so be it. The next game to be released and spinoff from that universe will be Metal Gear Rising: Reveangeance, starring none other than MGS2 protagonist and new Cyborg Ninja Raiden. That’s due on 2013, and one can only wonder when we’ll get more information from Kojima and company on Metal Gear Solid 5. Only time will tell for sure. — TJD, GMA News
