NBA: Clips gets Odom, Mo Williams opts in to Jazz
Mo Williams picked up his $8.5 million player option, which allowed the Los Angeles Clippers to include him in a four-team trade that sends the point guard to the Utah Jazz, while picking up Dallas Mavericks forward Lamar Odom, Broderick Turner of the LA Times reported. The deal is expected to be cleared by the league office later today. The Jazz send the Mavericks a trade exception, acquired last season when they dealt center Mehmet Okur to the New Jersey Nets, which doesn't take up any space on Dallas' salary cap, while the Clippers agreed to deal 2012 second-round pick Furkan Aldemir (53rd overall) to the Houston Rockets. The 2010-11 NBA champion Mavericks are trying to clear salary in the hopes of being able to offer free agent point guard Deron Williams a max contract. If hadn't been able to deal troubled forward Odom, they would have bought out the rest of his contract, which would have made him a free agent. Odom returns to the team that drafted him with the fourth overall pick back in the 1999 NBA Draft. Williams will also experience a homecoming of sorts, as he was the Jazz's second round pick back in 2003. Williams is expected to compete with the incumbent Devin Harris for the starting point guard position. - AMD, GMA News
