With the latest version of its OS X operating system coming out soon, Apple Inc. has filed for United States trademarks for "Mountain Lion" and "OS X Mountain Lion."

A report on The Next Web cited two entries in Trademarkia.com indicating the trademark applications were filed only this month.

Both applications for "OS X Mountain Lion" and "Mountain Lion" were filed July 9 and were considered "new applications."

Earlier this month, The Next Web also reported that Apple agreed to pay China's Proview $60 million to settle a trademark dispute for "iPad."

It is also facing another trademark lawsuit from a Chinese chemical company called “Jiangsu Xuebao“ - the Chinese translation of “Snow Leopard.”

Mountain Lion, or OS X 10.8, is scheduled for release this month, with Apple having released the Gold Master version of OS X Mountain Lion to developers.

It may cost $19.99 as an upgrade and is to be delivered via the Mac App Store.

A Gold Master is "likely the final beta version before it becomes widely available to consumers this month," The Next Web said.

It promises features from iOS, its platform for mobile devices like iPhones and iPads.

These features include Notes and Reminders as applications separate from Mail and Calendar, and features introduced to the Mac in OS X Lion. — TJD, GMA News
