Cabanatuan pupils start to learn about Cha-Ching money smarts
College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC) Cabanatuan grade 2 learners sang the money-smart tunes of earning, saving, smart spending and donating on the first day of implementation of Pru Life UK’s Cha-Ching Financial Literacy for the Youth Program. Cha-Ching lessons are integrated in the grade 2 curriculum following an agreement between Pru Life UK and CIC, the first private school to incorporate the Company’s money-wise instruction for kids.
Pru Life UK Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Belle Tiongco shared her appreciation of the consistent positive endorsement of Cha-Ching among teaching institutions. “Cha-Ching is starting to broaden its reach in the country, and we are glad to be piloting our first money-smart lesson in Central Luzon. It is our hope to continuously propagate financial literacy among Filipino youth to encourage good financial management sense in the future.”
CIC Cabanatuan Grade School Principal Emilia Joson expressed enthusiasm in the execution of the Cha-Ching program in their school. “It’s quite exciting because this is a new program in our school and we are lucky that we are one of the beneficiaries of Pru Life UK in introducing this program to our learners,” she shared. “Actually some of them are already familiar with Cha-Ching and we can see how excited the children are.”
CIC teachers conducting the Cha-Ching lessons were likewise eager to introduce money-smart values to their students. Math teacher Glaiza Gonzales prepared in advance to ensure she will maximize the potential of the teaching material. “Talagang nag-isip ako ng questions, ng presentation, nag-research ako. Pinaghandaan namin talaga. Ang mga bata kasi nung nalaman na may Cha-Ching na-overwhelm sila sa excitement, kaya ngayong na-conduct na namin ang first day nakakatuwa dahil gusto talaga nilang mag-participate (I really thought about questions, the presentation, and I researched. We all prepared for this. The children were all overwhelmed with excitement when they learned they will be having Cha-Ching lessons, so we are really pleased that they are keen to participate now that we conducted the first day of lessons.),” she said.
The students were thrilled to encounter the Cha-Ching band composed of Prudence (smart), Pepper (shopaholic), Charity (giving), Zul (sensible), Justin (entrepreneurial) and Bobby (the gentle giant) at school after being acquainted with them through Cartoon Network. “I like Cha-Ching because I practice earning, saving and donating. My favorites are Charity, Prudence and Pepper,” shared grade 2 student Janelle Denise Mercado.
The Cha-Ching Money Smart Kids Program is anchored on Cha-Ching, a musical edutainment cartoon series launched by Pru Life UK regional headquarters Prudential Corporation Asia (PCA) in September 2011 and released in seven Asian markets – Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. The first multi-country, multi-platform financial literacy for the youth initiative, it was developed in partnership with leading children’s channel Cartoon Network and internationally-renowned children’s education expert Dr. Alice Wilder.
Principal Joson recognizes the potential of the Cha-Ching program in training kids to make smart financial decisions in the future. She shared, “In the future I hope that these children we are teaching through Cha-Ching are the professionals that are successful in their chosen career, that they will be those who are exposed on how to help others by donating some of the money they earn. I want to see them financially successful someday.”
Part of Pru Life UK’s corporate social responsibility program, the industry pioneer in advocating financial literacy among the youth, Cha-Ching features an animated television show, interactive website, mobile applications, parent activities and school contact programs. Through Cha-Ching, Pru Life UK aims to reach out to school children and instill the money-smart values of earning, saving, smart spending, and donating.
The Philippines became the first country to integrate Cha-Ching in the grade school curriculum when the Department of Education (DepEd) signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Pru Life UK last April to implement the Cha-Ching Financial Literacy for the Youth Program in the 2012-2013 curriculum of two pilot schools – Tagaytay Central School in the Southern Tagalog Region and Upper Bicutan Elementary School in the National Capital Region (NCR) - which will initially run for two years.
