Jesus would definitely have used Facebook and Twitter, says bishop

Jesus Christ would have used social media like Facebook and Twitter to spread the Good News, a bishop told a German newspaper this week.

 

Freiburg Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, said he believes Christ would have taken "unusual routes" to reach out to people.

 

"Jesus would certainly today be on Facebook and Twitter ... He was always looking for people, and took unusual routes to do this," TheLocal.de quoted him as saying in an interview with the Ruhr Nachrichten newspaper.

 

Zollitsch was quoted in the interview as saying new social networking services as new ways to reach people, and not necessarily as "newfangled and pointless."

 

He said he sends Twitter messages with news from his archbishopric, and is considering setting up his personal account.

 

"Fundamentally all media are suited to bring the word of God to the people," he said.

 

Pope Benedict XVI himself has his own Twitter account, @Pontifex, with over 1.3 million followers despite having so far sent only 14 tweets as of December 26.
