The San Mig Coffee Mixers battled without James Yap for most of the second half, defeating the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, 79-67, to stay alive in their best-of-seven semifinals series, Saturday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

"Tough game. We're gonna do this one at a time," said San Mig head coach Tim Cone. "They beat us twice in a row. I believe we can win twice in a row. Guys like PJ [Simon] and Joe [Devance] and Ping [Marc Pingris] and Mark [Barroca], they really dug deep and played heavy minutes."

Marc Pingris was the best player of the game with 18 points and 10 boards off a 7-of-10 shooting clip. The energetic forward infected his teammates with his hustle on both sides of the floor. He scored eight of his 18 points in a decisive fourth quarter run that won them the ball game.

Yap was called for three early fouls in the first quarter. He committed his fourth foul seconds into the third quarter and got his fifth with an offensive foul on Jireh Ibañes less than two minutes later. With their superstar off the floor, the Mixers stepped up as a unit to keep their season alive.

Pingris was aided by PJ Simon and Joe Devance on offense, with sophomore Mark Barroca working both sides of the floor to personally bounce back from a crucial miss and error in Game 4 of the series.

San Mig held a slim one-possession lead in the first three quarters, before Wesley Gonzales and Marc Pingris extended their advantage to five at the 9:47 mark of the final period, 57-52.

Back-to-back hits by Pingris midway through the period then made it a nine-point game, 71-62.

Lay-ups from Paul Lee and Larry Rodriguez cut it down to a six-point game with 2:31 left, before the defense of Rain or Shine forced San Mig to a 24-second shot clock violation.

After misses from Mark Barroca and Lee, PJ Simon was fouled by Gabe Norwood with 72 seconds to go. Simon ended up making both, as the eight-point advantage led to a Yeng Guiao timeout.

On the ensuing play, Joe Devance went on to complete a steal, leading to two free throws to seal the deal for San Mig.

San Mig Coffee head coach Tim Cone surprised his counterpart by going small to start the ball game. Cone opted to start Marc Pingris at the center position alongside Joe Devance, James Yap, PJ Simon, and Mark Barroca.

Pingris took on the challenge head on by scoring six of their first eight points in the first period. While Pingris was doing damage down low, the Elasto Painters got most of their points from the outside. Larry Rodriguez connected with two mid-range jumpers, and Beau Belga and Gabe Norwood added a triple each to keep the game close. The Mixers held 17-15 lead to end the first quarter thanks to a late triple from PJ Simon.

The second quarter featured former UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz leading the charge for the Elasto Painters. Cruz scored six points in the quarter, the last of which came from a mid-range jumper at the 6:06 mark.

The Mixers relied on outside scoring to keep their heads above water with Simon and Jonas Villanueva sinking a triple each, but it was Pingris and Devance who scored the finishing kick for the Mixers, combining for six points in before the half ended for a 31-29 lead heading into the break.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first 24 minutes of play. The Mixers only made 12-of-38 for 32 percent, while the Elasto Painters only managed to sink 11 baskets in 42 tries for a paltry 26 percent.

“Alam na namin yung gagawin ng bawat isa kaya pahirapan talaga sa scoring,” said Simon. “Kailangan pati yung mga guards tumulong sa rebounding kasi pati yung guards ng Rain or Shine tumutulong rin.”

Joe Devance led all scorers with 20 points on 50 percent shooting. He also stuffed the stats sheet with seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks. PJ Simon also had his own double-double with 16 markers and 11 boards.

Larry Rodriguez top-scored for Rain or Shine with 14 points, in addition to seven rebounds and two steals. Paul Lee and Jeff Chan meanwhile combined to go 4-of-20 from the field for a mere 11 markers.
