Major Windows phone release due for 2013 yuletide

A job posting hints at the holiday season as the target date for the next major release of Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system, an enthusiast site reported.

WMPowerUser.com cited a Microsoft job posting for a software development engineer, indicating the next major release is to come out by that time.

"This is a great time to join as we’re completing our current release are getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year and we’re chartered with keeping the momentum for Windows Phone by bringing new killer devices and delightful user experiences," Microsoft said in its posting for a "Software Development Engineer in Test - Windows Phone."

WMPowerUser.com said this may indicate the Windows Phone team is still following its yearly cycle, but "somewhat independently of the Windows desktop team."

This is despite how Windows Phone and Windows now share the same core components.

It said this may mean that with the next major release not due until eight to nine months, features like 1080p screen support "will likely have to wait till then."

But it said this also raises the question of whether partners like Nokia would release high-end Windows Phones before the holidays due to the wait.

"The interesting question is if Nokia will release high-end Windows Phones before Microsoft releases the next major update, or as seems likely  we will have to wait for the next major release for the holidays also," it said. – KDM, GMA News
