(Updated 8:53pm) The Barako Bull Energy Cola survived a late-game scare and rolled past the San Mig Coffee Mixers on Sunday, 105-100, in the PBA Commissioner's Cup, at the SM MOA Arena.
"Our goal must be to show we're very competitive," said Barako Bull consultant Rajko Toroman, citing his team's close games against the Alaska Aces, Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters to prove his wards' worth. "We were just unlucky in the last few games, but this team knows how to play basketball."
Barako Bull (4-7), snapping a six-game losing streak to remain at seventh place, a game behind San Mig Coffee and the Air21 Express (5-6), who also lost on this day.
BBE last won on February 22 against Air21, 91-86. Although they haven't been formally eliminated from the playoffs, two of their last three match-ups feature Rain or Shine and the Petron Blaze Boosters, who currently hold the first and third best records in the conference, respectively.
Down by seven points after three quarters, Mick Pennisi's outside touch guided Barako Bull to a 19-7 romp to kick off the final period, 87-78.
The Mixers tried to rally around James Yap who scored their next six points, but Barako Bull had a counter for nearly every make. Josh Urbiztondo nailed a pull-up jumper with four and a half minutes to play to give his team a double-digit lead, 96-85.
San Mig Coffee came within single digits again with two and a half minutes left on a Mark Barroca-PJ Simon fast break, 100-92. Despite giving up two turnovers, the Mixers went on a 6-2 run, and charities by Denzel Bowles made it a 102-98 game with 31 seconds to play.
Barako Bull inbounded the ball to Allein Maliksi, who was immediately trapped and coughed the ball up. Bowles drove, drew the fouled and made two from the stripe, 102-100, with 24 ticks remaining. San Mig Coffee was forced to foul rookie point guard Emman Monfort, who made his debut for Barako Bull tonight, and the former Ateneo Blue Eagle earned a split, 103-100.
With 19 seconds left San Mig Coffee burned their final timeout, but they lost the ball to Urbiztondo, who split from the line with 13 seconds left. Barroca tried to sneak in a quick lay-up but it rimmed out, allowing Barako Bull to let out a long sigh of relief.
Urbiztondo was named player of the game for his 22 points, including 4-of-6 makes from beyond the arc, and three steals. Import Evan Brock tallied 25 points and 15 boards, while Maliksi and Pennisi finished with 19 points apiece and combined for 11 boards. Veteran Danny Siegle added 10 points.
Toroman feels good about his team's play as of late and believes they have a shot at making the playoffs. If not, he thinks Barako Bull is potent enough to be in a better place in the following conferences.
"We have a lot of support from management and they understand we have a lot of potential. We're in some kind of transition period, and they're very patient with us," the former national team head coach opined. "That's a great thing because if you lose six games in a row, you'd probably see a lot of changes."
