Videos on YouTube are about to get a lot more interesting, after Google added a new slow-motion feature for videos to be uploaded.
In a blog post, software engineer Eron Steger said the slow-mo effect is now part of the enhancement tools for YouTube users uploading videos to the site.
"To create a slomo video, visit the Enhancements tool or the YouTube Editor and apply it to one of your existing videos. You’ll get a smooth, slomo video that makes it look like it was filmed with a high-speed camera," Steger said.
He said the slow-mo tool can provide for a better experience for viewers of videos such as "a dog drinking water, rubber bands breaking a watermelon, or footballs in faces."
A separate article on The Next Web noted slow-mo videos appear to be popular on YouTube, with a channel of The Slow Mo Guys having "almost two million subscribers and more than 220 million views."
But it said it is not clear what impact this new feature will have.
"There will definitely be a surge of such videos at first, but will the overall popularity stay at the new high, will it fall back down to its current level, or will it hit a new low?" it said.
The Next Web also noted YouTube's presentl enhancement tools include:
- Auto-fix: to enhance the video’s lighting and color.
- Lighting and color
- Stabilize: to correct any shakiness.
- Trim: clip parts off the beginning or end of the video.
- Filters
- Face blurring
