The Far Eastern University Tamaraws look to begin a win streak to start the 76th season of the UAAP, when they face off against rivals Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena.
Buoyed by a near triple-double performance by Terrence Romeo (23 points, nine rebounds, 12 assists), the Tams erupted in the second half with a 57-41 performance to upend the FilOil champs UE Red Warriors, 89-78. Coming off the bench, former MVP RR Garcia also had a strong outing of 18 points, three rebounds and three dimes.
The Tams gave the Red Warriors a rough time on the court, thanks to their speed. FEU, which barely missed out on a Final Four berth last season, had a 17-7 edge in fast break points, 24-10 in turnover points. If Ateneo proves sloppy as well, they too might get run out of the gym.
The defending five-peat champs on the other hand looked primed to get blown out by the NU Bulldogs in their first game of the season, after trailing by as much as 24 points, 59-35 in the fourth quarter. However, the Blue Eagles' outside shooting finally came online, allowing them to get within 10 points with 2:04 remaining on the clock, though NU's Ray Ray Parks connected on a dagger triple to put this one away.
Hampered by an ankle injury, Kiefer Ravena was a definite non factor, coming off the bench for an eight-minute stint that saw him score just two points, as he missed five long-range attempts. Ravena expects to start and play more minutes though in this match, but the likes of Juami Tiongson and Nico Elorde will be looked to for more consistent production.
Game starts at 4pm
