The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the University of the East Red Warriors face off against each other on Saturday, at the MOA Arena, with the likelihood of key players being unable to get onto the court.
For the 2-1 Tigers, the health of marquee swingman Jeric Teng is in question, after suffering a hard shoulder injury in their game Wednesday versus the NU Bulldogs. Teng described himself as "doubtful" on Twitter, though whether or not the injury will linger, or is actually something worse than just a contusion, is still dependent on the results of an MRI.
Havent gotten the results of my mri yet. I need to wait for a few days for it. I am just advised to put ice and rest.Doubtful for sat's game
— Jeric Teng (@jericteng16) July 11, 2013
Even without Teng though, the Tigers came close to springing a surprise on NU, as Kevin Ferrer pumped in nine of his team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, aided by seven from Clark Bautista. That made it back-to-back strong outings by the third-year forward, increasing his averages to 14.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 blocks, after a poor first outing. However, they'll need Season 75-esque performances from Karim Abdul (9.7 points) and Aljon Mariano (6.7 points) to pull away early from UE, more so in the coming games should Teng miss time.
The 1-2 UE Red Warriors on the other hand will be without the services of center Charles Mammie, after the Sierra Leone native drew two warnings for unsportsmanlike fouls. Mammie is norming 10.3 points and a league-high 15.3 rebounds, and his absence would open up the interior to the Tigers to attack.
Without Mammie, the two players that manned the middle for UE last season, Adrian Santos and Chris Javier, will need to do their best to defend against someone like Karim Abdul. This season, the two have combined for just 7.6 rebounds, and even with Mammie, the Red Warriors are just a middle-of-the-pack rebounding team, with 44.3 per game.
Game starts at 2pm.
