Music icon Paul McCartney has joined the supposed international clamor to release Mali the elephant from Manila Zoo through a letter addressed to President Benigno Aquino III.

In a release circulated by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Beatles star “respectfully urges” Aquino to swiftly act on the elephant's transfer to a Thailand sanctuary where it can “take her first steps in freedom.”

“The video footage of Mali is heartbreaking,” McCartney's letter read. “You only have to have a heart to see what so many experts have already pointed out: that the way she continuously favors one leg is a sign of constant pain.”

Earlier this year, former Playboy model Pamela Anderson invited Aquino to a date, saying “Should you find yourself in Los Angeles, I'd love to take you to dinner and talk more about how we can help Mali “.

On Tuesday, celebrity couple Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera also joined the Mali campaign in favor of PETA. —Roehl Niño Bautista/KG, GMA News
