The Last of Us Multiplayer version censored in Europe
Released by Naughty Dog earlier this year to critical praise and acclaim, The Last of Us serves as a pivotal reminder of just how raw and engaging this tale of survival horror can get, let alone one that plays much like a zombie apocalypse scenario waiting to happen.
After finishing the game for myself on Hard mode, I can honestly say that the review by my friend and colleague Mike is spot on—the game is indeed a deep and innovative video game experience that no gamer should miss, especially those who own a Playstation 3 and can get their hands on this Sony Computer Entertainment of America exclusive.
While fans in America and its international territories await news on the inevitable downloadable content for the game, Latest News Explorer reports that the European/PAL release of “The Last of Us” has censored its Multiplayer mode, thereby eliminating the “exploding heads” and dismemberment featured in online gameplay.
While the single campaign/story mode remains unaffected and still retains the same uncut, uncensored content found in all versions, the multiplayer aspect where gamers play as survivors who chose to join a faction, either Hunter or Fireflies, and are then summarily pitted against one another in a standout that lasts for 12 weeks.
Players survive by scavenging for supplies and engaging against enemies successfully, as well as working together in cohesion by assisting and helping allies on their team.
According to Naughty Dog community manager EvangM in a private message to Ramify, “The gore and violence ratings are subject to local regulatory boards in various countries, so the game must be slightly changed to accommodate those choices.”
This in turn affects the visual aesthetic and output of multiplayer, which has two modes in Survivors and Supply Raid. Gameplay in The Last of Us is notoriously violent, so European audiences will be disappointed at not getting the full meaty, gory experience the game is well-known for.
A gripping tale of human survival and morality, The Last of Us is now available for PS3. — VC, GMA News
