The UST Growling Tigers and the UE Red Warriors will try to disentangle themselves from each other, when these two 4-3 squads clash on Thursday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Round one encounter
Both these teams entered the game sans a key player. UST Growling Tiger Jeric Teng was sidelined due to an shoulder injury, while Charles Mammie was serving out a one-game suspension for accumulating two warnings for unsportsmanlike fouls.
Neither side used that as an excuse though, as the two went back-and-forth for most of the game. UST thought they had the lead late though, entering the fourth up 63-56, but the Red Warriors forged three deadlocks in the final canto, the last coming at 74-all, with 3:22 left.
That turned out to be their final hurrah though, as UST mauled UE with a 14-3 run to end the game at 88-77, after holding their foes to a 1-of-9 clip in the final three minutes of the match.

The UST Growling Tigers have been unable to string together a win streak following Jeric Teng's shoulder injury. His status for this game is still uncertain, but what isn't is the fact that UE's Charles Mammie will be in the line-up, meaning the Red Warriors will have someone to combat Karim Abdul down low.
Without Teng, the three-point shooting of UST, normally one of their strengths, has gone down the toilet to a league-worst 23.9 percent clip (although prior to his injury, he was just 1/10 from outside the arc). UE in contrast, is 27.7 on three-pointers, fourth-best in the league.
On the other hand, UE has really been helped by the emergence of Dan Alberto and Ralf Olivares, two off-the-bench sparks that combined for 15.3 points on 35 percent shooting in the Red Warriors' last three outings. With the likes of Lord Casajeros, JM Noble and Gino Jumao-as not really lighting it up, Roi Sumang will likely rely on the duo to provide some balance to their team's scoring.
