The streaking Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles will try to keep the Far Eastern University Tamaraws under .500 in the second round, when these rivals clash on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Round one encounter
With Kiefer Ravena's right foot in a boot for protection, the defending champs Ateneo exploded for a 12-2 start. However, they were unable to maintain it, as FEU fought back and erected a 10-point lead of their own, 57-47, with 7:32 remaining in regulation.
Ryan Buenafe keyed in a big rally for the Blue Eagles, to get out ahead 58-57, with 5:13 left in the fourth, but Anthony Hargrove gave his side a four-point advantage with under two minutes on the clock. Chris Newsome then took over, and his free throws with 10 seconds left resulted in an extra five minutes.
With under a minute left again, things were all tied up again after Juami Tiongson free throws, 73-all. However, Ateneo just wasn't able to connect from the field, and Terrence Romeo was able to put this away with a perfect 4-of-4 clip from the line, as FEU won 79-75.
FEU outlook
FEU finally broke their second-round slump in dramatic fashion, winning in double overtime against the UE Red Warriors last Sunday, despite not having RR Garcia in the line-up due to suspension, 98-94.

The victory allowed the Tamaraws to showcase their depth. Mike Tolomia was expected to be a factor, and he was (13 points, seven rebounds, six assists), but the bigger story was the play of Gryann Mendoza (15 points, four triples, 13 rebounds), Anthony Hargrove (12 points, seven rebounds) and Christian Sentcheu (Two points, nine rebounds, three blocks). If Far Eastern U can get those sorts of performances more regularly, they become a lot less guard-reliant and predictable. Plus, with Ateneo's weak frontline, Hargrove and Sentcheu ought to be big factors on both ends of the court.
ADMU outlook
The Ateneo Blue Eagles had a huge 59-32 lead that was nearly wiped out by Adamson last Sunday, courtesy of a 19-0 Falcons blitz. But that was when Kiefer Ravena took over, scoring nine of his team's last 18 points to make sure his team could win their fourth straight, 79-66.

The Blue Eagles' running game was in full show, as they finished with a 22-8 edge in that category. Without a back-to-the-basket big man, the Eagles need that kind of easy production but it hasn't always been attainable for them. Prior to that game they normed just 8.8 an outing, for fifth place in the league. Things will be harder versus FEU though, as the Tams concede a mere 4.9 markers on the break.
