Samsung may roll out 1st open-source tizen tv 2014
Consumers may get their first major taste of the open-source operating system Tizen not on smartphones but on smart TVs in 2014.
Korea-based Samsung is planning to release a Tizen-powered TV as early as next year, tech site T3.com reported over the weekend.
Quoting a report on German newspaper Die Welt, T3.com said Samsung plans to create an ecosystem where all its products may be linked together.
“Tizen is going to be used on some of our smartphones just like on our TVs and on home appliances. This way we create an ecosystem in which we are able to connect all Samsung devices,” Samsung co-chief executive and head of Samsung consumer electronics business Boo-Keun Yoon said.
He said this includes TVs, home appliances, and smartphones.
Tizen, which claims to have big backers in the mobile industry, is a joint venture between Samsung and Intel.
T3.com said the Samsung official's comments also "suggest that the company views its Tizen operating system as the software all of its future consumer products will run on."
However, it said it was not immediately clear if his comments are the first solid indication that Samsung is preparing to move away from Google’s Android ecosystem.
It noted Samsung benefited greatly from Android’s popularity, with most of its smartphones running the Google operating system.
On the other hand, T3.com cited speculation earlier this year that Samsung was planning to move away from Android.
However, both companies eventually reaffirmed they had no plans to stop collaborating. — ELR, GMA News
