Bucking the sense of loss from Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), Philippine students did the country proud by bagging major awards at the recently concluded World Robot Olympiad in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Philippine Robotics Team brought home two silver awards in the Open/Creative category in the elementary and junior high school levels.
Students from Dr. Yanga's College Inc. won a silver for "Tubbataha Reef" in the elementary level, and another for "Banaue Rice Terraces" in the junior high school level.
Winning two bronze awards in the junior high school and collegel levels were students from Grace Christian College, for their "Tubbataha Reef" entry.
The achievement was more significant as it came days after Yolanda battered Visayas and Southern Luzon, leaving more than 5,000 dead.
With the Philippine delegation in the WRO last Nov. 13 to 18 was Elizabeth Fontanilla of the Department of Science and Technology's Science Education Institute.
Some 392 teams from more than 36 countries had taken part in this year's Olympics.
The WRO is a yearly robotics competition that challenges students in different levels and multiple curriculum-relevant subjects.
It aims to boost skills for surviving the 21st century, while promoting human values like teamwork, innovation, creativity and problem solving. — TJD, GMA News
