Olivia Hinojosa, a staff from the Communication Foundation for Asia (CFA), shows copies of the comic book "A Pope Named Francis: A Man of Mission and Compassion," on Tuesday, September 30. The comic book, which depicts Pope Francis as a model in transforming Catholic social teaching, will be distributed to various dioceses during his visit to the Philippines in January 2015. With roughly 100 days to go before Pope Francis visits the Philippines, the Catholic Church's social arm Caritas Manila has started selling Pope-related merchandise such as t-shirts, pins, and memorabilia.

Caritas seeks to channel the proceeds to helping the poor and to shoulder part of the costs of preparations for the pope's visit, Church-run Radio Veritas said.

"Ang ating ... Social Service and Development Ministry, sila ang isa sa mga naatasan na puwedeng maglabas ng mga collaterals using the logo, official logo para nga makatulong sa mga mahihirap, at para makapag donate din tayo sa gastusin sa darating na Papal Visit kasi syempre marami ring gastos yan," Veritas quoted Caritas Manila executive director Fr. Anton Pascual as saying Friday.

The merchandise will bear the logo of the papal visit, which reflects solidarity with victims of recent calamities.

Pascual also said they are boosting their preparations now that there are just about 100 days left before Pope Francis arrives.

The Pope is due to visit the country Jan. 15 to 19, and is likely to visit areas hit by recent calamities, including super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) which left more than 6,000 dead. — Joel Locsin/VC, GMA News
