The Department of Transportation and Communications on Wednesday announced the reimposition of the "no plate, no travel" policy for cars in November, and for motorcycles next January.
In an interview with reporters, Transport Secretary Joseph Emilio "Jun" Abaya revealed the department is implementing the policy anew as the backlog in license plates seems to be on the wane.
"Noong kapanahunan ko, nakita namin na may backlog sa paggawa ng plates kaya unfair naman sa taong-bayan na meron tayong "no plate, no travel" policy… kaya ni-relax natin," he said after a Senate budget hearing.
In 2011, the Land Transportation Office – a DOTC agency – was nursing a severe backlog in the issuance of license plates.
"It is only proper for the society to reimpose the policy… For the four-wheeled or motor vehicles, we will reimpose it in November… and January for motorcycles," he said.
Abaya also noted that licensed plates have been piling up in LTO storage rooms because car dealers do not immediately claim the newly-issued plates.
"Ang nakita namin, dealers ang hindi kumukuha ng plaka kaya 'yung storage rooms ng LTO puno na. This is one way to encourage and really motivate ang mga may-ari," he said.
Last July, LTO deferred the reimposition of the policy that was scheduled on August 1. – VS, GMA News
