Technically inclined owners who chose to stick it out with Amazon's Fire Phone may have something to play with this Christmas: a major update to the Fire OS.

A report on 9to5google.com said the changes already standard on other platforms include custom ringtones, blocking phone numbers, and connecting to a VPN.

"(T)here’s also a few new handy SMS/MMS settings, the ability to translate text and identify famous artwork with Firefly, more customization for the lock screen, a new 'Best Shot' camera feature, and auto-scroll for your Kindle books," it said.

Fire OS is an Android-based operating system.

However, 9to5google also noted the update may not make quite a splash, as the phone did not sell too well.

"Offering hardly anything that wasn’t already on the market, the device launched at a price of $199 on contract (and AT&T-only, to boot), but very soon became basically free (and $199 unlocked) after sales figures turned out to be absolutely depressing," it said.

Other features of the Fire OS 3.6.5 update include:

  • Translate text and identify famous artwork with Firefly
  • Text translation from/to: English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish, and artwork recognition for 2,000 famous paintings with info available from Wikipedia
  • Best Shot feature, with three versions of a given photo letting a user choose the perfect shot.
  • Select additional keyboard languages
  • Block unwanted phone numbers
  • View more information and control music directly from the lock screen
  • Read Kindle books in one continuous scroll
  • Enhanced battery performance
