The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) extended their condolences to the family of physicist Angelita Castro-Kelly, who passed away recently due to a lingering condition.
Castro-Kelly was the first woman to become Mission Operations Manager at the NASA. She succumbed to lupus complications on 7 June, and is survived by her husband and three children. She passed away at the age of 73.
She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics in 1962 from the University of Sto. Tomas, graduating summa cum laude. Considered one of the 100 Most Influential Filipinas in the US, she was also a recipient of the 1993 Presidential Award “Pamana ng Bayan” for Science and Technology.
“The PCW is grateful to Castro-Kelly for inspiring “Juanas” to dream big and prove that women are equally competent and capable as men, particularly in the traditionally male-dominated field of Science and Technology,” said PCW in a statement. — Bea Montenegro/TJD, GMA News
