Who will claim the votes of Bicolandia?

All eyes are on the Bicol Region this coming 2016 election, with five of the possible candidates for vice president tracing a connection to the vote-rich region.

The latest Comelec data shows Region V has 3.01 million registered voters, including those without or with incomplete biometrics data.

Five of the six possible final candidates for vice president in the upcoming 2016 national elections tout a connection to the Bicol Region.

The Bicol Region almost consistently ranked fifth nationwide in registered voters and number of voters who actually cast their votes.

In the latest senatorial elections, 2.49 million of the 3.04 million of its registered voters actually cast their votes.

Bicol roots

One of the vice-presidential aspirants is Sen. Francis Joseph ‘Chiz’ Escudero. He served three terms as representative of the 1st district of Sorsogon before moving up to a senatorial post in 2007.

On the other hand, Leni Robredo hails from Camarines Sur, and currently serves as representative of the 3rd district of the province. Her husband, the late Interior Sec. Jesse Robredo, was a six-term mayor of Naga City.

Meanwhile, Senators Gregorio ‘Gringo’ Honasan and Antonio ‘Sonny’ Trillanes IV also trace their roots to the region. Honasan’s mother is a teacher from Sorsogon while Trillanes’ father grew up in Ligao, Albay, according to their profiles on the Senate website.

Another vice presidential aspirant is Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano. His wife, Taguig City Mayor Laarni Cayetano, is from Tiwi, Albay.

Escudero, Honasan, Trillanes and Cayetano all won a Senate seat during the 2013 mid-term elections.

Escudero, Honasan, and Cayetano were all in the top 12 senatorial candidates of all the provinces in Bicol. Escudero placed first in Sorsogon, Albay, and Camarines Sur.
Trillanes was also in the top 12 of all except one province in the region.

Although the Commission on Elections has yet to release the official list of candidates, survey frontrunners in the presidential race include former Interior Sec. Roxas who is joined by Robredo; Sen. Grace Poe-Llamanzares who is teaming up with Escudero; Vice President Jejomar Binay who has Honasan as his running mate, and Sen. Miriam Defesor-Santiago who’s running with Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. from the Ilocos Region.

Three of the four presidential candidates trace their roots to the Visayas: Poe and Santiago are from Iloilo, and Roxas is from Capiz. Poe currently resides in San Juan, and Binay is from Makati City and Batangas.  — Jamaica Jane Pascual, GMA News Research/RSJ/TJD, GMA News
