This Saturday, Sine Totoo airs a shocking i-Witness documentary that recently became a Finalist at the New York Festivals.

Kara David’s “Alaga" documents the parasites that plague the townsfolk of Trento, Agusan del Sur. Here, not only children but almost all their parents as well suffer from extreme cases of schistosomiasis, a disease caused by worms.

Kara meets residents with yellowing eyes and skin from the worms, and stomachs that rival those of women seven months pregnant. Joan, a handsome young man who used to engage in manual labor, now simply awaits death because of the disease. While Floripaz’ brain has been affected by worm infection and she can no longer stand nor speak.

Almost every member of the Bandera family suffers from schistosomiasis – mother, father, children - except for the youngest child. But how long can the baby hold out?

Schistosomiasis causes permanent damage to the liver, kidneys, or brain. In an interview with Sine Totoo host Howie Severino, Kara David and researcher Wilma Sesaldo discuss that saving Trento’s residents is relatively simple - providing access to safe water and proper sanitation. But something as simple as a water pump takes years to get installed.

Find out more about these deadly worms from Kara David’s “Alaga" airing Saturday late night over GMA 7’s Sine Totoo.
