Maskne: How to get rid of acne caused by using face masks

By Maine Aquino

Face masks are part of the new normal as it protects you from the deadly virus that is COVID-19. However, these same face masks can cause a skin condition called maskne or acne breakout due to wearing face mask.

According to InStyle.com, New York-city based dermatologist Dendy Engelman M.D. said that the maskne is also known as acne mechanics, "a physical type of breakout that results from excessive friction and rubbing.”

Dr. Engelman added that this breakout will appear in the place where the mask sits like cheeks, chin, and nose.

To avoid and fight maskne, here are some tips that you can follow:

Change or dispose of used masks

One of the simplest ways to get rid of getting clogged pores is washing cloth masks and disposing of used masks. This way, that the face will be free from bacteria buildup inside the mask.

Choose a mask with a gentle fabric

If you're using a cloth mask, make sure that you're using a gentle fabric so that it will lessen friction.

Elle.com wrote, “You want a material that creates as little friction as possible on your skin. Silk would be the most gentle and a few brands sell washable silk masks (the delicate fabric is often not machine washable). You can also look for material that feels silk-like in its smoothness.”

Wash your face before and after wearing the mask

The cleansing method will make sure that you won't have a build-up inside the mask.

Dermatologist Tiffany J. Libby, M.D recommends in InStyle.com that people should consider benzoyl peroxide cleansers.

"I recommend starting with a benzoyl peroxide cleanser once a day to target bacteria and remove excess oil."

Don't load up with products

Wearing too much makeup or other skin products under the face mask will cause maskne.

Dailymail.co also wrote that loading up different products can trigger maskne. Clinical aesthetician Pam Marshall said, “Our skin does not like to be irritated, either through using too much product or by too much manipulation.”

Choose the right skincare

Dr. Erum Ilyas, a US board-certified dermatologist and the CEO and founder of Montgomery Dermatology said in an article from Asia Tatler that products with anti-oxidant and anti-inflamatory ingredients are must-have skincare.

"Focus on products with hydrating properties that have added antioxidants and anti-inflammatory effects. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients to look for include vitamin E and niacinamide, while hydrating and skin protective ingredients include ceramides, squalene, and glycerin."
