Pinoy MD: Secrets to youthful, glowing skin

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

Youthful, beautiful, glowing skin doesn't happen overnight; like most things in this world, it takes some work. As the years go by, the signs of aging start to affect your body and skin is no exception. And no, don't put the blame on your parents' skin because genetics only play a small role here.

According to Dr. Jean Marquez of DARE, “Aging starts as early as your late twenties to early thirties. Talagang tatanda tayo.

“Ang ating elastic fibers that's giving the flexibility to the skin and 'yung collagen which gives strength to it ay mababawasan o masisira overtime.

“So ang nangyayari diyan, it gives you sagginess ng skin.”

Thankfully, there are easy ways to slow down the aging process and prevent damage to your skin. That's because damage can also be caused by a range of factors such as sun exposure, diet and lifestyle, and stress -- factors that you can actually control.

Follow these tips and take the first step towards youthful-looking skin from Pinoy MD:

1. Wear sunscreen

You've heard this time and time again but UV rays damage DNA cells and increase your risk of skin cancer. UV rays can also deteriorate the collagen in your skin, which results in premature signs of aging.

If you're thinking of skipping the sunscreen because it's a cloudy day, maybe it's time to think twice. The sun never takes a vacation so always remember to apply sunscreen and make it a habit. It's the least you can do to the largest organ in your body so it's best to use a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher before stepping outside.

2. Moisturize

Just like how your body needs at least 6 to 8 glasses of water on an average day, your skin needs some hydration too. Apply a moisturizer that's specifically designed for your skin type -- if you're oily skin go for gel moisturizers and cream moisturizers for dry skin.

3. Laser Skin Tightening

For those who've reached their 30s, you can opt to go for non-surgical skin tightening lasers that help stimulate collagen and elastin production under the skin.

Dr. Jean Marquez suggests this procedure for women and men who'd like to have their double chins significantly reduced with no downtime.

4. Dermal fillers

Another way to combat skin aging fast is through dermal fillers which are substances that are injected beneath the surface to add volume and fullness to the skin. Each filler is designed to treat signs of aging and other cosmetic procedures which could last for 6 months up to two years.

5. Ultherapy

Last but not least is Ultherapy, the FDA-cleared, non-invasive procedure that lifts the neck, chin and brow, and improves lines and wrinkles.

According to Pinoy MD, Ultherapy relies on ultrasound therapy to go deeper than other non-invasive treatments for collagen stimulation and provides proven results in a single treatment.
