Say 'bye, bye' to back acne with these tips from 'Pinoy MD'

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

While having bacne (back acne) is pretty normal, it may leave one feeling insecure from time to time --- especially during the summer.

Back acne is caused by excess oil and dead skin cells that build up over time just like the ones in our faces.

As Dr. Maria Mercedez Cancio-Cruz shares with Pinoy MD, “Same lang sila.

“Nag-uumpisa ito as a blackhead or a whitehead tapos magiging inflamed and then mamumula. Eventually, magkakaroon ng nana,

“'Yung iba naman namumula, tapos nagiging malaki at malalim na masakit. 'Yun yung tinatawag na modular cystic acne. 'Yun ang mas grabe mag-scar.”

Luckily, with a few simple modifications to your routine, you can banish those pimples away.

1. Eat skin-friendly foods

Did you know that what's good for the heart is good for the skin too? Make sure you eat a well-balanced meal every day and that includes adding more veggies to your diet.

A thing to keep in mind is to cut back on foods that cause acne such as dairy and sugars. Never, ever restrict yourself or do extreme dieting.

As Dr. Cancio-Cruz explains, “May studies na scientific-based na sinasabi nila if you take a lot of sweets, those high in glycemic index, can cause acne because sugar induces inflammation. So, pwedeng mag-trigger o mag-worsen 'yung tigyawat.”

2. It's all in the clothing

Certain types of clothing can also trigger a breakout so opt for clothes made from breathable materials like cotton. Remember, tight-fitting clothes push oils deeper into pores and may irritate hair follicles that lead to red bumps.

Heat can also inflame the pimples in your back so make sure to keep away from the sun, especially in the afternoon.

Dr. Cancio-Cruz says, “Kasi pag mainit, very intense 'yung heat lalo na sa back so pag nagsi-swimming ka, 'yung intense heat from the ultraviolet rays can now burn the skin.

“May inflammation na nangyayari kaya kung may pimple ka d'yan pwede magalit ito.”

3. Give your back some love

Give your back some tender loving care.

Try exfoliating your back from time to time to make sure that the hair follicles remain clean and unclogged, making them less prone to pimples and should help keep your back acne at bay.

4. See a dermatologist

Lastly, if you've tried all the tips above and your bacne still irritates you, consider scheduling an appointment with your doctor.

“As soon as you have blackheads or whiteheads, do not prick, do not experiment on cosmetics, peels, or medications you can buy over the counter. Consult with a dermatologist,” Dr. Cancio-Cruz says.

Dermatologists offer personalized advice to help keep things under control that may just do the trick you're looking for.
