Running out of face masks? Try making this DIY face shield

By Patricia Isabella Romarate

As the 2019 coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the country, Filipino citizens, especially the frontliners, are now experiencing a shortage on resources, and one of those are face masks.

Fortunately, there is now a new way to protect yourself from COVID-19 infection.

How? DIY face shields.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, on his Facebook Live video on March 20, demonstrated how simple it was to make one.

He said, “Isang beses niyo lang gagawin, lagi niyo pang magagamit, araw-araw.”

Yorme announced on Facebook that the mass-produced face shields will be distributed to the health care workers, police personnel, and even stall owners in Manila's public markets as well as barangays.

Last March 15, a local artist in Palawan named JC Enon uploaded a DIY face shield tutorial video on YouTube.

He then initiated the Face Shield Project in support of preventing further spread of the coronavirus disease in the Philippines.

According to Enon, “Ido-donate namin ito sa frontliners tulad ng mga nurses, doctors, police sa checkpoint. Sila kasi yung mga directly na possible na mahawaan or makasagap agad ng mga virus.”

The materials used are: A4-sized acetate, double-sided tape, scissors, puncher, needle and thread, garter, and thermal foam.

He also made another tutorial video on how to make an eco-friendly face shield using plastic bottles.

The Face Shield Project on Facebook reported that, as of March 19, 4,103 face shields were produced, and 2,741 pieces were already distributed to a total of 93 agencies or establishments.
