WE ARE ONE: 5 movies and events to watch online for free

By Aaron Brennt Eusebio

Various film festivals including Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, Toronto, and New York are currently part of the 10-day project called We re One: A Global Film Festival that started on May 29.

Aside from movies, the first-ever online film festival will also upload short films, filmmaker perspectives, interviews, conversations, and so on until June 7.

To save you from the hassle of going through this vast collection, GMANetwork.com listed five movies and events that are worthy of your time.

1. Crazy World

Crazy World revolves around a gang of child-snatching mobsters known as the Tiger Mafia, who believe in the idea that the kids' blood may have supernatural properties. The gang made a mistake of kidnapping a “team of pint-sized kung-fu masters.”

According to Ugandan director Nabwana I.G.G., he created the film “as a preemptive measure to discourage the kidnapping of his children.” Crazy World is now available for viewing online.

2. The Epic of Everest

The Epic of Everest was originally shown in 1924 and was directed by John Noel. The film follows the third attempt of mountaineers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine to climb Mt. Everest. Unfortunately, George and Andrew died without reaching the summit.

The film was digitally restored in 2012 by the British Film Institute. The Epic of Everest is scheduled to premiere on June 5, 5 am (Manila time).

3. Air Conditioner

Air Conditioner is a fictitious story about a security guard named Matacedo, who works in the Angolan capital Luanda. One day, the air conditioning units in their city start to mysteriously fall from the buildings. Matacedo's boss asks him to find an air conditioner, which starts his journey into “a pleasantly surreal, jazz, and rap-inflected journey through the city streets.”

Air Conditioner was first shown in International Film Festival Rotterdam and will be available for public viewing on June 6, 11:45 pm (Manila time).

4. Conversation between Song Kang-ho and Bong Joon-ho

Academy Award-winning director Bong Joon-ho and his lead actor in Oscars-winning 'Parasite' Song Kang-ho sat down with producer Olivier Pére, who was the artistic director of Locarno International Film Festival from 2009 to 2012.

During the 72 Locarno International Film Festival, Song Kang-ho, arguably South Korean's greatest and most acclaimed actor, was presented with the Excellence Award, the first Asian actor to be recognized with the feat.

The conversation between the two Korean stars will be streamed on June 4, 4:45 am (Manila time).

5. Wake Up: Stories From the Frontlines of Suicide Prevention

Wake Up: Stories from the Frontlines of Suicide Prevention is a documentary based on the non-profit organization Wake Up, which was founded by a group of college students from the University of Missouri who lost one of their classmates to suicide.

The documentary-film also tells the story of four different groups with stories to tell about suicide--American veterans, members of the LGBT community, university students, and gun owners.

Wake Up: Stories from the Frontlines of Suicide Prevention will be streamed on June 5 at 6:45 am (Manila time).

Aside from showing the world's best films, We Are One: A Global Film Festival is also raising funds to help different organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, UNHCR, Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders, Leket Israel, GO Foundation and Give2Asia, among others, in their fight against COVID-19.

The films can be exclusively viewed on the We Are One YouTube channel. A donate button will also be placed for anyone who wants to help the cause.
