LIST: Five songs to add to your New Year playlist

By Marah Ruiz

What a year 2020 has been!

The year has brought with it a series of challenges, like the COVID-19 pandemic which has brought the world to its knees.

In the Philippines, the year was bookended by the eruption of the Taal volcano and the back-to-back battering of typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.

Truth be told, we are still mostly unsure of 2021 as most parts of the country are still under GCQ or general community quarantine.

Aside from this, we are still crossing our fingers for an effective vaccine against the COVID-19 virus.

Having said all that, we'd still like to embrace the new year with a bit of optimism.

Here are a few songs to get you ready to face the brand new year.

1. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" by Monty Python

"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" is a song written by the legendary Eric Idle, member of the British surreal comedy troupe Monty Python.

The song was first featured in the 1979 satirical film Life of Brian. The song's lyrics encourage one to whistle away life's worries.

2. "High Hopes" by Panic! at the Disco

"High Hopes" is the second single from American pop rock band Panic! at the Disco's sixth studio album 'Pray for the Wicked.'

The song recognizes how hard it is to work for your dreams but encourages you to power through. This is a great reminder for those who struggled to make a living this year.

3. "Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles

"Here Comes the Sun" is a song by the legendary English rock band The Beatles from their 1969 album 'Abbey Road.'

It was written by member George Harrison and talks about his relief at the arrival of spring. This is a great metaphor of starting anew in 2021 after the many challenges of 2020.

4. "thank u, next" by Ariana Grande

"thank u, next" is a surprise release by singer Ariana Grande from her fifth studio album, also called 'thank u, next.'

While Ariana wrote the song's lyrics express her gratitude towards her past relationships, its core is still about learning from past experiences and moving on with those life lessons in tow.

We are so ready to break up with 2020 and move on to 2021.

5. "Happy Days Are Here Again" by Barbra Streisand

"Happy Days Are Here Again" is a song from 1929 which has been sang by various recording artists over the decades.

One of our favorite versions is that of Barbra Streisand which is sang slower and mellower than most of the song's popular renditions.

The song says goodbye to sad times and happily embraces the here and now which is filled with happiness.

One can hope that it will indeed turn out like this in 2021.
