Rachelle Ann Go shares how Martin Spies proposed to her

By Bianca Geli

International singer and stage performer Rachelle Ann Go and husband Martin Spies looked back on how their engagement took place.

In her recent vlog, Rachelle said, "Today we will be talking about our love story's part two. Let's start in August 2017, this was when I went back to the Philippines from New York to visit my family."

Martin narrated how he knew he was ready to propose.

"We were doing a pre-marriage course and that's when I really was starting to think about proposing and when that would happen. I was also coming to the Philippines that August to meet her family, that was kind of like the next step.

"I had lunch with a friend, more of a mentor, his name's Allen.

"I was telling him about Shin. I was kind of opening up about her, that I feel like she's definitely the one I want to marry.

"I was going to the Philippines to meet Shin's family and then maybe sometime down the line in London, I'll propose."

Martin then kept in touch with Rachelle's friends to create the perfect engagement ring.

It was team effort that helped Martin figure out what kind of custom-designed engagement ring that Rachelle would love and appreciate.

He continued, "I started the process of the engagement itself when I knew we were going to Boracay.

"I was trying to find a place around Boracay where we could go and I could propose. I had never been to the Philippines so I had to do some research."

As he was taking care of some preparations, he knew he had to keep everything private to not spoil the surprise.

"I didn't want people to see so it was a nerve-wracking experience, I didn't want anyone to find out."

Rachelle admitted that though she and Martin had only been dating for a few months, she was hoping he would propose since the timing felt perfect.

"When we were in Boracay, I was not expecting that you would propose but I was hoping that he would propose to me because he was there with my family already.

"I felt that it was the perfect time for him to do that."

She recalled getting excited whenever she saw an event preparation on the beach, hoping it was for her.

"The funniest time, every morning they were building a tent for special events. Every morning, they were preparing something, and I felt like, "Is this for me? Maybe Martin's proposing to me.'

"Everytime I see someone preparing something, I would fix my hair... but I was just assuming. It wasn't."

Eventually, Rachelle just let go of her expectations of a proposal happening.

"On our last day there, I told myself to just stop assuming."

After Martin got the blessing of Rachelle's family during that Boracay trip, he continued with the plan to pop the big question. He took Rachelle on a dinner date to a restaurant for their last night in Boracay.

Rachelle recalled, "I wasn't really thinking it was going to be a proposal."

She relayed how Martin took her to the shore, suggesting they take a photo together, but Martin was actually already trying to ask her the question.

Martin said, "I was trying to figure out how to get the words out.

Later on, Martin explained why he proposed to Rachelle early on in their relationship, "I was a believer in short engagements.

"God was really lining things up for me to move my company from New York to London. I just felt that when I move, we should be married and we should live together.

"I was fast and it was a crazy time but we're glad."

Martin is currently a general manager for Equinox, an American luxury fitness company.

Rachelle admitted, "We didn't really take it slow. It was a very quick love story."

She also shared how she knew he was the one. "I was at peace, and I still am.

"During the whole process, the courtship, the engagement. I was at peace there was no doubt at all that this isn't right. I think that can be a lesson not just for us but for everyone who's dating someone right now or planning to date someone in the future.

"I think it's a good sign if there's no doubt. If you're feeling at peace about this guy or this woman, that's a good sign that this is the one. But if there's one hint of doubt, think twice.

"I've learned, I've gone through some heartbreaks. When I met Martin, there was no doubt at all. I knew he was the one."

Martin then counted down his marriage check list and described how Rachelle is the perfect wife for him.

"I think everyone's journey is different, but for me, there were three to five things I had as non-negotiables or dealbreakers. First, finding someone who is a Christian.

"Secondly, that you love family," he told Rachelle.

"I could see that family is important to you and that was very important to me too.

"Personality and humor is important, and you're funny. I laugh with you all day, and I guess having fun. You spend the rest of your lives together to be fun and not too serious, there's a lot of fights, too."

Rachelle added, "Marriage is hard work, we'll get into that next time."

In conclusion to their engagement proposal story, Martin reflected, "Some people need more time, I think God's time is always perfect."

Rachelle and Martin met in New York City in February 2017, got engaged in Boracay in August 2017, and tied the knot in April 2018. They are currently based in London.
