Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to donate US$1 Billion to COVID-19 relief efforts
Jack Dorsey, CEO and co-founder of Twitter, announced that he will be donating $1 billion to fund the fight against the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).
The tech billionaire will be using the equity of Square, a mobile-payment company where he is also the CEO and owns 14% share.
Jack chose to give the generous donation to a charitable fund called Start Small, and he emphasized that all transfers, sales, and grants will be made public in the tracking sheet he embedded in his tweet.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires index, Jack's fortune is estimated to be around $3.9 billion. So, the $1 billion that he is pledging is indeed about 28% of his wealth, as he mentioned in his tweet.
Jack explained why he decided to make the huge donation. He tweeted, “The needs are increasingly urgent, and I want to see the impact in my lifetime. I hope this inspires others to do something similar. Life is too short, so let's do everything we can today to help people now.”
He also promised that after 'disarming this pandemic', he will shift his focus to girl's health and education and the universal basic income (UBI). He said, “I believe they represent the best long-term solutions to the existential problems facing the world.”
