SHINee goes underwater for 'Atlantis' music video

By Cara Emmeline Garcia

After two months since their successful comeback, Princes of K-pop SHINee have returned with the release of their 7th repackaged album “Atlantis.”

On Monday, April 12, SHINee members Onew, Key, Minho, and Taemin released three new songs, including the title track “Atlantis,” “Area,” and “Days and Years” along with their nine songs from their seventh album “Don't Call Me,” which totals to 12 songs.

In particular, the title song “Atlantis” is a pop-dance track, in which the members' vocals give the song a unique refreshing feeling.

The song talks about falling deeply for someone after meeting them for the first time and comparing the unknown feeling to the fictional mid-Atlantic continent that sunk in the ocean.

In a press release, the group shared what fans (called Shawols) can expect from the new track.

Minho said, “As soon as I heard it, I thought it was a SHINee song. The point of the track is that the 'Deep Deep Deep' part of the chorus can feel as if it is going down into the deep sea, and it will suit you well if you listen to it while driving or taking a walk.”

Additionally, Key mentioned, “As it was a song we saved, we prepared really hard. You can meet SHINee's upgraded coolness.”

Main dancer and maknae Taemin said, “I wanted to show the refreshing feeling of SHINee again. The rhythmic guitar sound at the introduction is the killing point, and the seasons are well buried from now to summer.”

Onew added, “It's a good song to listen to in summer with a cool feeling. The music video will add fun to seeing lively CG such as elevators in the sea and moving water droplets.”

During their special live broadcast, “SHINee's Sailing: Finding 'Atlantis'” on the NAVER V LIVE SHINee channel, each of the members discussed what they were up to as well as had mini-games revolving around the theme of their latest track.

Taemin asked, “What do you want to do in Atlantis? I think we need to equalize [our eardrums], because I've been taking scuba diving lessons and I know the pressure goes higher when you go deeper.

“When I watched the teaser, I also thought it'd be cool if we danced in front of an aquarium. I know it sounds so cheesy but I feel like we could produce it really well.”

After listening to “Area,” Minho, who participated in the writing of its lyrics, said, “I wrote a lot of the lyrics here. We had to adjust it over 15 times, and then it got chosen. I edited it more than 15 times because I didn't like it at first, so I wanted to make it perfect.

“I thought the chorus was alright. I had hopes for how you guys would sing it [while writing] and you've done a really great job.”

Finally, after hearing “Days and Years,” the SHINee members shared how the song compliments the other tracks with Key adding, “It's been some time since we've heard this. The song shows an unfiltered emotion and we really like this a lot.”

By the second half of their VLive broadcast, the members also discussed their upcoming schedules starting with Taemin who'll be making a solo comeback in May with a special Beyond Live concert, Minho with a new drama also in May, Key making his solo return by July, and Onew by September.

They also announced that a special fan event will be held on the group's 13th anniversary this coming May 25, 2021.

“Atlantis” is out now on all digital streaming platforms.
