'Squid Game' director reveals core plotline for Season 2
Squid Game director Hwang Dong-hyuk is sharing more details about what is in store for Seong Gi-hun, the character played by Lee Jung-jae, in the second season of the hit Netflix series.
According to Korean entertainment news website Soompi, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed in an interview with broadcaster KBS that the second season would be about “Seong Gi-hun unraveling [the mysteries of the organization behind the game]. The overarching plotline of Season 2 will be the story of the people that Gi Hun meets and the people he chases after.”
The director also shared that discussions were also being had with streaming giant Netflix not just about a second season, but season three of Squid Game as well.
“I think we'll be reaching some sort of conclusion [to our discussions] soon,” he said. “We know that many people are waiting, so everyone is working hard to prepare for the next season with a positive outlook.”
However, Netflix had to clarify later on that nothing was “set in stone” as of now.
Greenlighting more seasons of Squid Game could be an easy decision for the streaming giant, especially since the show has become the streamer's biggest one, netting 111 million viewers almost a month since it was first launched.
The record had previously been held by the historical romance drama, Bridgerton, which drew 82 million subscribers in its first month. Even before the official numbers came out, Netflix co-CEO and content chief Ted Sarandos had already said that Squid Game was already on its way to becoming one of Netflix's most successful shows.
The popularity of Squid Game has also made international careers available for some of its cast. After the success of the show, model-turned-actress Jung Ho Yeon was named a Louis Vuitton global ambassador.
