Carla Abellana shares dog grooming tips

By Racquel Quieta

Grooming is an important part of pet care, not just to keep your dogs looking and smelling good, but also to ensure that they are clean and free of bacteria and viruses that may make them sick.

In a recent episode of Mars Pa More, Kapuso celebrity and fur mom Carla Abellana groomed one of her adopted fur babies from PAWS, Fly, and gave a few grooming tips as well.

So, whether you're a first-time pet owner or you just recently decided it would be better to groom your dog yourself, here are some practical dog grooming tips you could use.

1. Bathe them in a spacious area.

Make sure there's enough room for you to move freely when you bathe your dogs. Ideally, there should already be a faucet and hose where you intend to bathe them and that the floor doesn't get slippery when wet.

2. Bathe your dogs at least once a week.

Unless your dog suddenly got all muddy or they have a skin condition that would require you to bathe them more frequently, bathing them at least once a week should be enough, so as not to dry up their skin or fur's natural oil.

3. Use a shampoo or soap based on your dog's needs.

Dogs with skin conditions such as mange or ticks and fleas infestation would need medicated soaps or shampoos. Otherwise, they can use regular ones.

Carla recommends that you use organic soap and shampoo, so you can ensure that your pets won't be exposed to harmful chemicals or ingredients.

4. Avoid getting soap or shampoo in their eyes and ears.

The chemicals or ingredients in shampoos and soaps may irritate or cause infection in your pet's eyes or ears.

5. Don't forget to wash their feet!

Dogs love to dig up dirt or run around in the garden, so their feet definitely need the most cleaning.

6. Expect to get wet.

According to Carla, bathing dogs is very much like bathing kids. It's inevitable to get wet, so anticipate this when you bathe your dog.
