The GMA Kapuso Foundation considers itself, many times and in many occasions, like a parent. And just like any other parent, we, too, feel joy, and happiness as we stand in quiet witness to how our Serbisyong Totoo affects its thousands of beneficiaries and anticipate with stifled excitement how our sincere and honest service changes their lives.
 
One specific project in which the Kapuso Foundation feels itself to be just like any parent is our annual school opening project known as the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan. Now on its fifteenth year, the UHSK, for short, is meant to respond to the results of a survey done by the Department of Education years ago which showed that the lack or absence of school materials was a major reason why there were many drop-outs among the First Graders in Public Elementary Schools, especially in far-flung and underserved areas of the country. This sad situation prompted the Foundation to initiate a project which simply provided these children the notebooks, pad paper, pencils, crayons, sharpener, eraser, and schoolbag that they needed in school. Hence, the birth of the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan project. Just as parents are meant to assist and guide their beloved child, we, in the Foundation, see ourselves not only lifting up children who need help but also coming to the assistance of their parents whose meager income, if any, we believe are better used for even more essential items such as food. Since its launch in 1997, our UHSK project has served 375,012 Grade One students from the most marginalized sectors of Philippine Society.
 
This year, the Kapuso Foundation’s Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan is set to serve more than 45,000 children from underserved public elementary schools in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.
 
The First Steps to a Future project of the GMA Kapuso Foundation, indeed, is an apt example of just how seriously the GMAKF takes its role as a loving parent to the needy and whose vision-mission it is to be the most accomplished, most trusted, and most credible non-government organization in the Philippines; the leader in serving and uplifting the lives of the underprivileged through serbisyong totoo and the responsible use of media.
