San Beda University guard James Kwekuteye played a big role as his Red Lions emerged victorious in a grind-it-out contest against San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Friday.
Kwekuteye led his team in scoring with 11 points, including a clutch three-pointer that put San Beda on top with 25 seconds remaining in the game. The game took many twists and turns from there, but eventually ended on a JB Bahio putback that sealed the 61-60 win for San Beda.
Though the Red Lions (4-0) came out on top, they admit it was not easy for them, particularly with San Sebastian’s style of play.
“The physicality of San Sebastian. They’re very aggressive,” Kwekuteye said in the post-game interview when asked about what the biggest challenge was in the game.
He was glad to see, however, that his team was up to the challenge.
“We came out in the end and won the game, so I’m proud of my team.”
And though they will likely take a moment to appreciate getting this win, San Beda knows the road isn’t getting any easier with several games against the teams in the upper half of the standings still waiting them.
“We’re going to go back, go back to the bubble. We’re going to relax. Probably have a break tomorrow, depends on coach. And get back the next day.”
