Despite big game, Saint Benilde's Miggy Corteza says team success the most important thing

Miggy Corteza was the consistent presence that his De La Salle College of Saint Benilde team needed in its 83-73 escape against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in NCAA Season 97 action on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3 guard tallied a double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds to go along with one assist and one block. He scored at least four points in each quarter of the game, but stepped it up in the fourth, where he posted eight points and five rebounds as the Blazers averted a late-game meltdown.

Although he had a stellar output, Corteza said he doesn't mind his individual performance and stressed their team wins have heavier weight.

"Good performance but for me, I'm not content with this one. I have to stay focused and move on to the next game kasi I don't really care about individual stats," Corteza said.

"As long as my team wins and we keep on piling the wins kasi ayon 'yung mas importante sa basketball. I'm more of a team player, I want to see my team do well. Inuuna ko talaga 'yung team bago yung sarili kong agenda."

As for the wins, they have been coming for the Blazers of late, as they have now won four in a row to improve to 4-1 in the standings.

Despite the early success, Corteza shared that they are not taking their opponents lightly as they eye to make it to the Final Four this time around.

"As coach Charles (Tiu) said, never give up. Don't take them lightly," Corteza said.

"Every team in the NCAA can play. Wala talaga kaming minamaliit, we treat them with the same respect every single game."
