Extra shots in training now paying off for Mapua as NCAA Season 97 heats up

Seemingly from out of nowhere, Mapua University has been making it rain from downtown in their past two games.

And the Cardinals' starting point guard Brian Lacap revealed the secret behind their fiery offense: extra shots in training.

So far, it has been paying off for the Intramuros team.

"May mga extra shooting pa nga [kami] after ng training at nagpapasalamat ako na nag-pay off 'yung extra shooting namin," shared Lacap on the heels of their 84-65 lopsided win over De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Tuesday.

Prior to their game against University of Perpetual Help System DALTA last Wednesday, Mapua was only averaging 5.4 made three-pointers per game in five games played. But they detonated for 16 triples during the 95-83 victory over the Altas

They proved that that win was no fluke, dropping 12 of their 33 attempts from rainbow country against the Blazers with Lacap and teammate Paolo Hernandez nailing four each.

These two wins were also crucial for Mapua as those snapped a two-game losing streak after opening NCAA Season 97 with three straight wins.

Lacap, who shared he was asked to shift from shooting guard to point guard, stressed that their blazing offense started from what they have been doing in training.

"Syempre nagsimula to sa practice eh, sabi ng coaches namin kailangan namin i-improve 'yung tiwala namin sa isa't-isa," shared the court general.

"Kailangan namin magtiwala sa kanila na 'pag mas open 'yung sa labas, ibigay namin kasi nagpa-practice naman kami everyday."
