San Beda University is keeping its hopes high that James Kwekuteye didn't suffer a major injury after hurting his ankle in their 63-57 win over De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde on Sunday.
According to San Beda's physical therapist Michael Sunga, the star shooting guard suffered a sprain on his left ankle after he was taken down by AJ Benson at the 1:31 mark of the fourth quarter.
The Filipino-Canadian guard was then helped off the court as he had a hard time walking while Benson was called for an unsportsmanlike foul.
"Nahirapan siyang maglakad today so we'll get him checked tomorrow by a doctor tapos we'll take it from there. We'll just go for a check-up," Sunga told GMA News Online.
Red Lions head coach Boyet Fernandez is also hopeful that Kwekuteye will make it back in time for their crucial match against Mapua University in the Final Four stage, especially with them holding a twice-to-win disadvantage.
"We just take it one game at a time, we're looking for Sunday and hopefully, James will be okay," Fernandez said. "I'm praying for that and sana wala namang major problems but it is what it is so tignan natin."
Sunga, though, said that based on his initial assessment of Kwekuteye, it is likely that the 23-year-old cager will return on Sunday's game against the Cardinals.
"Palagay ko naman aabot siya kasi Sunday pa naman 'yung game."
