San Beda University team captain Ralph Penuela is not just a good basketball player.
The guard also has a big heart for the environment as he shared on Tuesday his advocacy on recycling plastics for sustainable use.
In a Facebook post, Penuela shared that his family has influenced him in maintaining the cleanliness of their environment.
"I got the chance to live with my family again.. and they influenced me to clean and segregate plastic wastes so we can give it to organizations like Green Antz Builders or The Plaf , that recycle plastics-- building classrooms, walkways, homes, with eco-bricks. Houses, benches, shelves, out of eco-lumbers. Tables out of eco-boards etc," Penuela shared.
Penuela said while cleaning and segregating used plastics may take effort sometimes, he looks at the big picture and thinks of the possible uses of the plastics that were recycled. "These reasons are enough to compel me in segregating plastic wastes and inspire or encourage other people to do the same," he said.
The San Beda captain also brought this habit during their bubble in Taytay, Rizal and said they have collected 9 kg of plastic bottles in just four months.
From there, Penuela said he realized how much more could be collected if other teams and other leagues did the same. "It's gonna be tons of kilos of plastic waste that will be lifted from Mother Earth's shoulders," he said.
"I encourage you to join me, to join us-- San Beda University-- in helping our community to have a healthier environment. Together, our small steps will become a stride, and eventually a leap onto a greener, healthier, and more sustainable environment."
Good job, Ralph!
